This is the subdued version of the distinctive insignia of the 1st Armored Division. It is designed from the triangular coat-of-arms of the American World War II Tank Corps. The tank track represents mobility and armor protection, the gun denotes firepower and the lightening symbolizes speed and shock action. The Arabic number '1' in the apex of the triangle indicates the First Armor Division and the nickname of the division, 'Old Ironsides', emblazoned under the triangle, is officially sanctioned by the Department of the Army and is an integral part of the insignia.
