Description:

The nickname of the 2nd Infantry Division, "Indianhead," was derived from its World War I insignia, said to have developed from an emblem a truck driver in the division had painted on his truck. But that's only half the story. Trains Commander, Colonel Herringshaw, proposed a 'contest' of sorts to his force for a simple, easily distinguishable design. An Indian Head submitted by Sergeant Louis B. Lundy, Company A, as an all-American symbol, was chosen as 1st prize winner; a star designed by Sergeant John Kenny of Company B, indicative of the fact that they came out of Mexico during the border trouble in 1916 into Texas, was declared 2d prize winner. But the Colonel was not satisfied. It is said he laid the two designs side-by-side and in a stroke of genius, placed the Indian Head on the Star. The insignia portrays the All-American traditions of the Division as well as its place of origin.
