This is the desert version of the distinctive shoulder sleeve insignia of the 3rd Infantry Division, the 'Iron Fist' of the XVIII Airborne Corps. The three stripes, desert tan in this patch, are symbolic of three major operations in which the division participated in World War I. The stripes are from sinister chief (upper left-hand corner) to dexter base (the extreme base point on the right hand). The direction of the stripes is described in heraldic terms and refer to the points on a shield.
